The summer holidays have seen a wide variety of workshops and events take place, including poetry, photography, art, music and dance.

Skye & Lochalsh Young Carers Summer Project

Over the last few weeks, photographers Cailean Maclean, Iain Smith and artist Kate McMorrine have been working with Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers.  Three groups of youngsters went on outings on Skye with the artists, visiting Braes, Ord, and Harlosh.  They heard stories about the areas they were visiting and spent time taking photographs.  Afterwards they took part in workshops at Aros in photo editing and art, creating work inspired by their experience.

Dancing for Fun in Kyleakin

We started up a Dance for Fun class in Kyleakin Hall at the beginning of the month.  This class is for all ages and abilities and the focus is on enjoying dance to a wide range of music.  The group has danced different styles, such as Bollywood, African and Scottish.  The session takes place every Tuesday from 2-3pm until September 4th.  You are most welcome to come along – this class is guaranteed to put a smile on your face!

Movement for Health in Dornie

Having finished a block of movement sessions with the residents of Bùdhmòr Care-home in Portree, Meena has recently started working with a group of older people at Airdferry Day Centre in Dornie as part of her Movement for Health sessions.  The group has been doing chair-based exercises to tracks by Blair Douglas, the Vatersay Boys and Indian music and having a great time.  Meena has also done taster sessions with residents at An Acarsaid Care-home in Broadford this month.

Group Art Therapy at Bùdhmòr Care-home

Art Therapist, Gail McGregor has begun working with some of the residents at Bùdhmòr Care-home in Portree.  The group is currently working on the theme of ‘Journeys’.  In the first session the participants had a discussion about a journey that was special to them.

Poetry in Portree

Local poet, Maoilios Caimbeul held a poetry workshop at Portree Library in July.  Together, he and the participants talked about poetry and wrote a renga, a collaborative poem.  You can read it here.

Ceilear Ceilidh Trail

We were also lucky this month to host the young musicians of Ceilear from Fèis An Earraich, who came to play in the Aros restaurant over lunch time and entertained locals and tourists with their tunes and songs.
